This doesn’t mean that you can not live off the grid in this state, far from it, in fact, there are a lot of people living off the grid in this state and there are several off grid communities in South Dakota. Your biggest challenge for living off the grid in this state will be the cold climate.

The best places to live off the grid in South Dakota are located in the southeastern parts of the state, as the climate is significantly milder than in the rest of the state. Counties like Minnehaha County, Pennington County, Aurora County, Union County, Clay County, Lincoln County, Yankton County, Bon Homme County are the best for off grid living and homesteading.

Minnehaha County

Minnehaha County has the highest population density in the entire state, there are around 170k people living in an area of 809 sq mi. Minnehaha County has everything that you would need for off grid living, although due to the high population density the price for a homestead or an off grid property will be significantly higher than in the rest of the state. Minnehaha County is located in the eastern part of the state, which is relatively good for living off the grid. Pennington County is one of the largest counties in the entire state, some would say that the population density is high but there are around 100k people living in an area of 2,776 sq mi. Needless to say, you will have no problem finding suitable land for homesteading and off grid living for relatively cheap. The demand for housing is only high in and around the urban areas, in rural areas you will find the price of property to be significantly lower than in the urban areas.

Aurora County

Aurora County is probably one of the best places to live off the grid in South Dakota, the population density is extremely low, as there are around 3k people living in an area of 708 sq mi. The price of property in Aurora County is one of the lowest in the entire state.
